Jo and I did a, Police/Fire/Military Charity Ride today, in memory of "9-11", we did the 11 mile "Patriot's Ride" and decorated our bikes in red/white and blue. All the event monies and merchandise sales go to the 3 different support charities so it was a very worthwhile run. The thing besides the "ideal" of the ride was that it was "inexpensive" to enter and let US, decided what to give to each charity, instead of the event organizers trying to "get it all up front", like most bicycle charity rides we've looked into. You, didn't "HAVE" to form a team or collect pledges, could if you wanted to but it was so nice to be able to be a part of a bicycle charity event as a "individual" and not have to "BUG" other's for pledges of monies, JMHO, YMMV.
It was DARK and CHILLY when we headed out from the apartment at 6AM. and we wished we'd put on the jackets right away, LOL! The gathering had about 350 riders, main group was the "Heros Ride" a, 28 mile, HILL FEST and the one we did, the "Patriot Ride" a 11 mile Rails-Trail loop ride. They had several fire trucks, police units, (even the Bomb Squad Truck), Emergencey services crews, ect. on display and even a "landing" of the local "Flight for Life" helo and tours for the kids! We headed home via the same route, 26 miles total but a lot of FUN for a major good cause!
