Bike down time, equals a re-vamp for the homemade utility trailer!

Had a problem with the bicycle, it's now fixed by the LBS mech's but they couldn't get at it till "today" so I had a couple of days of , "down time" so I did a re-vamp of my homemade utility trailer. We've been without a car for several months now and although my Mom, does come a get my wife Jo for food shopping a lot, (Women time as she calls it, LOL), there are times when there's no way to get "FOOD" in the cupboards, unless we do it by bicycle!!

I had the LBS make me a custom hitch as the orginal hitch wouldn't work with "bikes with disc brakes"! Basicly I took a used "bicyle kid trailer" tore off all the old dead nylon outer coating and took off the top braces. Orginally I had a 3/4" piece of painted plywood for the bed to hold the tub but it made the trailer pretty "HEAVY"!  So I walked down to Home Depot, got a nice 48" long piece of bar stock metal, cut it in half and made "twin braces". Attached these to the framework and bolted the "tub" to the new braces and got rid of that old plywood board! Repainted the whole trailer, added a brace for my "flag" pole and added a "blinking taillight". I pulls really nice and I've been able to hold 2 weeks worth of food in it! The next upgrade is a "larger/deeper tub" unit.

We just got "updated" wheel's for my wife's bike, (deore sealed hubs and mavic rims, double butted/SS spokes). The LBS asked me how I was going to get the "old wheel's home", I just bungie corded" them to the sides of the tub and headed home! Yep, it's not stylish at all but it get's the JOB done so I'm happy with it!

(Note: the orange bungie cord is to make SURE the lid stays on in high winds and the "trailer hitch" is "folded underneath for storage!), Yes, my wife is so COOL, she let's me keep the trailer in the kitchen as it's a hassle getting in and out of the bedroom, LOL. ;)

Take care, Ride Safe, have FUN!

B.J. :)
